Gavia vehicles come standard equipped with a 852 Ultra Miniature Echo Sounder from Imagenex mounted at the tip of the nose cone. The forward-looking sonar uses a narrow forward looking beam to detect targets in front of the AUV and provides advance information about an obstacle or a sudden rise in the sea floor. The collision avoidance detection and breaking limits are user configurable and take into consideration the depth, altitude and speed of the vehicle. The sonar can be turned on and off by the Gavia Control Centre.
The optional camera is also installed in the nosecone.
